After overall offense in the CFL was down last season, new changes were announced on Wednesday that aims to dramatically increase the amount of scoring for the upcoming season. People don’t want to watch any sport with low-scoring games so to keep people interested in the league, the CFL realized that it needed an overhaul. Here are some of the changes that will help boost up the scoring:
Field size: The most dramatic change is the size of the field will move from 110 yards to just 15 yards. Basic math should tell you that 95 fewer yards to run should translate into more touchdowns and a lot more time to keep scoring them.
The number of quarterbacks on the field: the league will now allow two quarterbacks to be on the field at the same which means two footballs can potentially be on the field at the same time. This should confuse players on defense just enough to give the offense a bit of an edge and it opens up the possibility of two touchdowns at the same time which could lead to some of the highest-scoring games ever. That’s what fans want.
Automatic ejections: any player with 2 unnecessary roughness penalties will be automatically ejected. Also, any player who drops a pass in the endzone will also be ejected. If you can’t score touchdowns, you are making the game boring. Get out.
Communications co-ordinators: New this year, each team will have a communications coordinator on the bench from the officiating team. This allows them to be subbed into the game to play without fear of being touched because putting your hands on an official is not allowed.
New penalties: a quarterback faking a slide will now be considered downed at that spot. While they want to increase offense they don’t want bitch moves being used to achieve that.
End of Quarters: After the first and third quarters, if the score is low, the officiating crew has the discretion to add a zero to the end of each team’s score. If there is no score then that team will be removed from the league and sent to the XFL.
